Why is it that on the NHS hearing aids are free but not glasses?

It is not logical, if you cannot see properly you are a danger to yourself and others. Yet you have to pay for spectacles. If you are hard of hearing, you get an aid free on the NHS, why?

  1. youve answered your own question you NEED glasses therefore youll pay for them therefore they can charge for them
  2. huh... never really thought about that. I suppose that ... wait... i have no idea ?!
  3. No under 16,,and O,A,P,,,,Glasses are free,,,,on The N H,S,
  4. I don't know, but it's not fair! I have poor eyesight, but absolutely perfect hearing. Sod's law!
  5. glasses r free too. but theres a limit of how much the nhs is prepared to pay for any individuals glasses
  6. I think that the NHS tries to stretch itself too thin most of the time. If you want them to provide EVERYTHING for free to EVERYONE all the time, you are going to have to accept some massive tax hikes. As a Brit now living in America, I can assure you that the NHS is a wonderful system, and people need to stop bitching about it and realize how good they've got it. In America the number one cause of personal bankruptcy is medical bills they cannot afford to pay.
  7. Glasses used to be free many years ago but there is that many people needing them nowadays that could be the reason they are not
