What happens to tv band radios when television signals go digital?

Next year I believe television broadcasts are going to go digital. What will happen to your "tv band" radio signals. I would assume you will no longer receive the tv band signals. Am I mistaken?

  1. The frequencies will be auctioned off for other uses. There is a lot of interest in using it for wireless networking...
  2. This is a very interesting question. It seems that some will actually survive the switch over because there are no FCC deadlines for the switch over of low power TV stations. Check out this article for some very fascinating information including a way some people ingeniously launched an FM radio station for much less than what is normally required in NYC: http://www.broadcastlawblog.com/archives/fm-radio-who-needs-lpfm-why-not-just-expand-the-fm-dial.html
  3. correct ALL TV bands will be digital, the FCC (Fedrral Commuications Commintion) which control TV & Radio ?Broadcasting bought up all the analog TV bands and they will be used for ememrgency communications betwee nthe Police Fire ect. all a afer result of 9/11 when we were attacked
  4. it does not look good. first of all, all new technologies are digital, including TV audio, so that an analog audio receiver is not likely to get anything but perhaps a buzz or two. it is possible that when the analog channels are auctioned off, a TV station might just bid on them and thus keep analog on the air for a while at least. it is a facinating scenerio but the TV stations i have worked for would all be too cheap to pay for a second channel.
