What's the difference between Destroyers and Cruisers today?
Most modern missile destroyers are able to do pretty much everything except launch fighters nowadays. Yet four navies still operate Cruisers. What are the differences between modern destroyers and "Cruisers" in today's navies? Or is it just a nomenclature thing.

- Not a great deal. The make-up of naval ships engenders them with more multi type fire power, heavier protection and the virtual disappearance of ordinary class destroyers. Today, such ships more in the line of heavy cruisers. Frigates still in use. Better armed / substituting for destroyers. In shore craft, heavier, faster, also better armed With battleships completely gone!
- I'm not entirely sure, but I think Cruisers are more for carrier battlegroup support and protection and are heavier, while Destroyers are sub hunter/killers and are lighter and faster. brian
