What would it cost to buy something today that cost £9 in 1963?
My mother bought a hat for our wedding in 1963 which cost her £9. It practically cost as much as my dress! What would be the equivalent price today.

- nothing
- About £350-400
- Estimating that £9 was a week's wages in 1963. Today's wages £250 estimated.
- As a general rule, a shilling (5p) in the early 1960s is equivalent to £1 today. So a £9 hat would be the equivalent of £180 in today's money. The comparison doesn't necessarily apply to everything. The computer we had at my college cost tens of thousands of pounds - or about ten years' salary for a lecturer. My phone is more powerful.
- i think $250, but you should checkout if it does not have some historical element if so it can cost more.
- If you apply the increases in the Retail Prices Index (RPI) from Feb. 1963 to date, the equivalent of £9.00 in 1963 is £125 today. NB. RPI has been rebalanced 3 times since 1963, hence why 3 separate calcs; 191.8/102.7 x 9.00 = £16.81 394.5/108.5 x 16.49 = £59.96 212.9/101.9 x 59.96 = £125.27
