Finally Today

What are significant contemporary issues today?

I have to do a current events presentation on a significant contemporary issue or situation that is facing our world today. I'm trying to brainstorm right now, but can you guys give me some ideas? This is for a theology class. So instead of something like say, global warming, rising obesity in children, the extinction of spotted owls, etc., can you suggest things that are more of ethical issues? Maybe wars, genocides, current debates on the morality of certain issues...just problems that can be applied to this type of class. Thank you!

  1. write about media censorship by governments worldwide... you can write about internet censorship in numerous countries around the world, censorship regarding legal matters eg: hiding the identities of convicted sex offenders... censorship of numerous media avenues... and then write about the control of the media = the control of the mind sort of thing...
  2. The Rise of Islam. Very significant and always swept under the Persian rug. Google this site; TheReligionofPeace.com .. it will frighten you to see what is going on under your nose.
  3. Hi there How about social isolation and current events and value bases that lead to this? Here in the UK we have yet another child 7 years old Khyra who was starved to death by her mother. Her siblings were grossly malnourished. A two years old child Peter Connolly was beaten to death over several months. Another child Victoria Climbie was starved and beaten to death over several months. My old rescue dog's previous owner lived alone. No-one noticed when the old man died. The dog was with the owner's body for at least 48 hours - it may have been longer. Why does no-one notice the starving child? Why does no-one hear their weeping? Why do professional care workers not notice the injuries to the child? Why don't we care any more about our friends and neighbours? Don't you think the Human Rights Act and the ensuing onslaught of personal injuries claims has taken away our collective responsibilities to care for each other? I hope this helps. Good luck and best wishes.
  4. Secularism, the contemporary relevance of the BIble, Islamophobia, the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, the role of internet based social networking in society etc - so many. Sounds interesting.
