Where to get a yorkie?

Can anyone tell me where I can find or look up QUALIFIED and responsible breeders of yorkies in Florida? I see ads all over the newspaper, and there are many pet stores nearby, but I worry about funding any type of puppy mill. Do all pet stores get there pups from puppy mills? How do you know? I went to a pet store today and they had 3 yorkies, one was a so called "teacup" YES I know they are the runts of the litter, and can get bad health problems. I was a little upset when the shop guy called her a "Teacup" and was $1200 versus the other ones that were normal and were $750. The poor thing was so tiny and fragile :( That y I must find a responsible ethical breeder in Miami,FL would be great! or south florida! just to make it clear! I do not want a "teacup" yorkie and I KNOW that it is just a name for a poor little runt. geez...

  1. Have you looked into rescuing a Yorkie?? There are so many dogs looking for a good home and I'm positive that there is a Yorkie or a Yorkie mix just waiting for you to come pick him up. Adopting is so rewarding and you know that you aren't contributing to the puppymills and backyard breeders. Please visit Petfinder.com and look at all the available dogs just waiting for your loving arms. Good luck
  2. go to this site: craigslist.com and post a wanted add... also, i would recommend going to either the AKC or UKC and looking for the Yorkie club through either one of them. The best way to find a good recommended breeder is from the AKC and UKC clubs. Otherwise you are at risk to purchase from a puppy mill. Whatever you do, stay away from pet stores.
  3. try petfinder.com you can type in the breed you want and how young or old your looking for and then give you the location and information to call about the pet. good luck on your search.
  4. wow so nice to see a senseable person looking for a dog. i wish i had a wonderful breeder for you. all i can offer is go to www.akc.org and look under yorkies and there you will find a listing of breeders in your area. these are not guarenteed perfect breeders. make sure you know known health problems andmake sure the breeder tests for these. make sure you can see where the pups were born and raised and see at least one parent. the parents should also have some sort of temperment testing done. often you can find champion parents with a pup in the litter that the breeder offers for pet only homes. you will have to have this pup spayed or neutered. which is probably what you are looking for. if the breeder won't let you come to their facility or see at least one parent stay far away from them. as for pet stores the extra charge for a teacup shows you what kind of practices they have and why you need to stay away from them. good luck. whatever pup you find or finds you is one lucky little one!
  5. If you want a registered yorkie, you can go on the AKC website and look for breeders in your area, these people are certified by the standards of the american kennel club and are very up to date on the things that matter to a dog owner, usually though a yorkie is very expensive, and sometimes with AKC breeders they will be asking top prices. Good Luck
